Protect Your Pets with Preventative Care
At Vets North, we understand that pets are beloved members of your family. Ensuring their health and well-being is our top priority. Our experienced veterinarians offer comprehensive vaccination programs to safeguard your pets from serious and potentially fatal diseases.
Why Vaccinate Your Pets?
- Prevent Serious Diseases: Vaccinations protect against highly contagious viruses and bacteria. These diseases can be fatal, or require lengthy and intensive treatments and hospitalisation periods.
- Herd Immunity: You may have heard this term before. The best way of protecting more animals is to have as many as possible protected by vaccinations. Having a high percentage of pets vaccinated significantly decreases the possibility of spread in the community, and helps to protect those animals who are yet to be, or are unable to be vaccinated.
- Kennels, catteries and day-cares: If your cat or dog go to a boarding facility or day facility, they will require vaccinations to protect themselves against contagious diseases, as well as keep others protected too. These close-quarters environments are potentially high-risk areas for disease spread. A lapsed vaccine course may result in your pet having to have additional vaccines to get back on track, so it is best to keep up to date.
- Zoonoses: Some diseases can be transmitted to humans from animals, so keeping your pet protected may also help to protect your human family. Another valuable reason to keep up with vaccinations.
Dog and Puppy Vaccination Schedule:
Diseases we vaccinate against: Distemper, Hepatitis, Parvovirus, Distemper, Parainfluenza (DHPPi vaccine), Leptospirosis, Canine cough
- 6-8 weeks old: First core vaccination
- 10-12 weeks old: Second core vaccination
- 14-16 weeks old: Third core vaccination
Which vaccines are given at each of the above appointments will depend on your puppy’s age and which (if any) vaccines have been given previously.
- 8-9 months: Final dose of DHPPi
- 15-16 months: Lepto and canine cough
Once your dog has had their initial course, they will require annual ‘booster’ vaccinations for leptospirosis and canine cough (annually from 15-16 months of age), and every 3 years for the DHPPi vaccine (from 8 months of age).
-
- Dog Annual Health Checks and Vaccinations: We will examine your dog to ensure they are in good health to receive a vaccination, and check their previous vaccination records to choose the appropriate vaccine/s for their current age, breed and lifestyle.
Cat and Kitten Vaccination Schedule:
- 8-9 weeks old: First core vaccination.
- 11-12 weeks old: Second core vaccination.
- 16-18 weeks old: Third core vaccination.
- 8-9 months old: Final dose in the initial course.
Diseases we vaccinate against include Feline Panleukopenia Virus (FPV), Feline Herpesvirus and Feline Calicivirus (together commonly known as cat flu).
-
- Cat and Kitten Annual Health Check: We will examine your cat to ensure they are in good health to receive a vaccination, and check their previous vaccination records to choose the appropriate vaccine/s for their current age, breed and lifestyle. (vaccination frequency will be every 1-3 years). We recommend an annual check regardless of vaccination timing recommendations to allow early detection of any conditions that develop over their life. Cats are very good at hiding pain, and regular checks give us the opportunity to detect disease earlier, which gives us a better chance of managing and treating earlier.
Rabbit Vaccination Schedule:
It is recommended that all rabbits are vaccinated for calicivirus, a fatal illness usually contracted from wild rabbits. At Vets North, we use Filovac which covers the most likely strains of calicivirus.
- 8-9 weeks old: First vaccine
- 12 weeks old: Second vaccine
OR a single vaccine can be given at a minimum of 10 weeks of age with no booster required.
-
- Rabbit Annual Health Check and Vaccinations: We will examine your rabbit to ensure they are in good health to receive a vaccination. Annual vaccination is recommended for rabbits to maintain their immunity against calicivirus.
At Vets North, our vaccination timing/frequency recommendations are in line with guidelines provided by the World Small Animal Veterinary Association (WSAVA). These recommendations are best practice and are designed to provide your pet with the best protection against some very harmful and potentially fatal illnesses.
Customised Care: We tailor our vaccination programs to each pet’s age, health, breed, geographical location and lifestyle. During each visit, we conduct a general check-up to ensure the best care for your pet.
