Most dental disease hides in plain sight 

Around 80% of dogs and 70% of cats have some form of dental disease by age two, often with no obvious signs at home. Left unchecked, it progresses quietly until treatment becomes more complex, and more costly. 

The good news: caught early, most dental disease is simple to treat. 

What’s included 

Throughout August and September, our nursing team is offering free dental checks for dogs and cats across all four Vets North clinics: Helensville, Kumeu, Waimauku, and Silverdale. 

A free dental exam gives you: 

• A proper assessment of your pet’s teeth and gums 

• A clear picture of whether treatment is needed, and how urgently 

• A conversation about next steps, if a scale and polish is recommended, we’ll talk you through it while treatment is still straightforward 

Why check now? 

Your pet’s mouth is checked at every visit to Vets North as a matter of course. A dedicated dental exam goes further, giving our nursing team the time to look closely and flag anything worth a vet’s attention. 

If early-stage disease is found, a scale and polish now is far simpler than treating advanced dental disease later. 

Signs to watch for at home 

• Bad breath 

• Red or swollen gums 

• Chewing on one side, or dropping food 

• Pawing at the mouth 

• Visible tartar build-up 

Many pets show no obvious signs at all, even when dental disease is present. This is exactly why regular checks matter.
