Understanding Lameness

Lameness in horses can result from various causes, such as injury, arthritis, or hoof problems. Our experienced veterinarians are committed to accurately diagnosing the underlying issues contributing to lameness.

Comprehensive Diagnostic Approach

We are one of only two clinics in Auckland who own and are trained to use the Equinosis Q technology. This technology was designed through collaboration between both equine veterinarians and engineers. It uses non-invasive inertial sensors placed on various points of the body to objectively identify and measure lameness in the field. You can see this on screen in real-time along with us, giving you reassurance of objective and accurate diagnosis. No subjectivity.

From a practicality perspective, we have both concrete trot-up areas and a lunge arena on site in Kumeu to undergo a thorough examination and start treatment.

Once a diagnosis has been made, we can work with you to create the best treatment plan for your horse.

Early intervention is essential to prevent further complications and restore your horse to optimal health.

Digital Radiology

Digital radiography (DR) is a widely used diagnostic imaging technique in equine veterinary medicine. It provides high-resolution, immediate images that are crucial for diagnosing lameness, fractures, joint issues, and other musculoskeletal or dental conditions in horses.

Common Applications in Horses:

  • Lameness Evaluation:
    • Imaging of joints (e.g., fetlock, hock, stifle) to detect osteoarthritis, fractures, or bone chips.
  • Pre-Purchase Exams:
    • Screening for underlying orthopaedic conditions.
  • Hoof Problems:
    • Evaluation of laminitis, navicular disease, abscesses, or hoof balance.
  • Dental Radiography:
    • Intraoral and extraoral images to assess tooth root abscesses, sinusitis, or malocclusion.
  • Back and Neck Problems:
    • Assessing vertebral alignment, kissing spines (overriding dorsal spinous processes), or fractures.

Advantages of Digital Radiography

  • Fast image acquisition (seconds).
  • Immediate viewing and analysis.
  • Better image quality and manipulation (contrast, brightness).
  • Storage and sharing of images is easy (PACS).
  • Reduced need for retakes, lowering radiation exposure.

Advanced Tendon Scanning

Tendon scanning is crucial for assessing the health of your horse’s tendons, especially after an injury. Using our in-house ultrasound technology allows us to accurately evaluate tendon health, identify the cause of the lameness, and create effective rehabilitation plans.
